A Fridge That Never Seems to Stop Running in August

In a Fort Lauderdale summer, a refrigerator works harder than it does anywhere cooler. The kitchen stays warm even with the air conditioning running, the door opens more often for cold drinks, and a garage can get far hotter than the house. Long run times on their own are not a fault. The question is whether the fridge still holds temperature.

How to tell normal from failing:

  • Check the numbers. Put an appliance thermometer on a middle shelf. The fresh-food side should be 40°F or below and the freezer 0°F, per USDA guidance. If both are there, the fridge is coping.
  • Feel the bottom grille on models with a front vent. Warm air flowing out means the condenser fan is working.
  • Look at the condenser coil. On many models it sits behind the lower grille or on the back. A thick layer of dust and lint makes the fridge run longer.
  • Check the door seals, especially on the door used most. A torn gasket lets humid air in.
  • Give it room. A fridge pressed tight into a cabinet or against a wall can't shed heat.

If temperatures creep above 40°F, the compressor never pauses even at night, or frost builds on the back wall of the freezer, book a visit. The technician will check the condenser, the fans, the defrost system and the refrigerant side; refrigerant work is done only by EPA 608 certified technicians.

After a Water Filter Change, the Dispenser Sputters

Swapping the refrigerator water filter is routine maintenance, and most of the time it goes smoothly. When it doesn't, the signs show up right away.

What usually happens:

  • Spitting and sputtering water. Air got into the line while the filter was out. It works its way out as you run water.
  • No water at all. The new filter isn't fully locked in, or it is the wrong model for your fridge.
  • A drip inside the fridge near the filter housing. The filter is cross-threaded, or its O-ring is damaged.
  • Ice that tastes odd for a day or two. The first batches carry carbon fines from the new filter.

What to do:

  • Run the dispenser in short bursts into a pitcher for a few minutes, or for the amount the owner's manual calls for, to purge air and flush the filter.
  • Take the filter out and reseat it until it clicks or turns fully into place.
  • Toss the first bins of ice made after the change.
  • Reset the filter light if your model has one; the manual shows the button sequence.

Call us if the housing keeps leaking, water stops completely with the filter seated, or the ice maker never resumes. A cracked housing or a failed inlet valve needs a part.

An Ice Maker That Quit After Plumbing Work

When a plumber replaces a valve, a water heater or the kitchen faucet, the water to the refrigerator is often shut off for a while, and now and then the small valve behind the fridge is closed and forgotten. Other times the line gets bent when the fridge is pushed back into place. If the ice maker stopped right after work in the house, check the valve behind or under the fridge first, then the line for kinks, then the ice maker's own switch. Give it a day once the water is back on; a fresh tray takes several hours to fill, freeze and drop. If it still makes nothing, or the fill tube is iced over, book a visit.

How We Handle a Fort Lauderdale Repair

A person takes your call. Someone answers 24/7, notes the appliance, the brand, what it is doing and your ZIP code, and offers a same- or next-day window.

The technician pins down the cause. Temperatures, power, airflow, water supply and controls get checked. You get the cause and the plan in plain words, and the go-ahead is yours to give.

The fix is proven. A genuine or OEM-approved part is installed, the appliance is restarted and checked, and the repair is warrantied for up to 6 months, labor included.
