Water Leaking From Behind the Fridge
If your refrigerator has an ice maker or a water dispenser, a thin supply line runs from a valve in the wall, under the sink or in the floor to the back of the fridge. Older installations often used plastic tubing, which can turn brittle and crack, especially where it bends. A slow leak can soak a floor for days before anyone sees it, and in a condo the water can reach the unit below.
What to do right away:
- Close the supply valve. Find out where it is before you need it; it's often under the kitchen sink or behind the fridge.
- Unplug the fridge before you pull it out or mop around it.
- Look at the connection points: the valve, the line along the back, and the fitting where it enters the fridge.
- Check the drain pan under the fridge. If it's overflowing, the water may be coming from the defrost drain instead.
A cracked plastic line can be replaced with a braided stainless line, and a leaking fitting or water inlet valve can be changed. The technician also checks the defrost drain, since a frozen drain can send water out from under the fridge. If the floor or a cabinet got wet, let the building manager know too.
Ice That Tastes or Smells Stale
Ice soaks up odors from whatever shares the freezer: onions, fish, leftovers in loose wrap. It also picks up a stale taste when it sits in the bin for weeks. Usually the fix is simple.
- Dump the bin and wash it with warm water and mild soap, then dry it before you put it back.
- Replace the water filter if it's past the interval in the manual; many makers suggest about every six months.
- Wrap strong-smelling food tightly or move it to sealed containers.
- Put an open box of baking soda in the freezer.
- Run some water through the dispenser and toss the first new batches of ice.
If the ice still tastes off after a new filter and a clean bin, or the water from the dispenser tastes the same way, the problem may lie in the water line, the inlet valve or the household plumbing. A technician can check the parts inside the fridge and rule them out.
A Breaker That Trips When the Oven Heats
The oven turns on, the elements start to warm, and the breaker snaps off. That usually means a short somewhere in the oven's high-voltage circuit.
- A failed bake or broil element can short to the oven body. Look for a split, a blister or a bright spot on the element.
- A burned wire or terminal behind the oven can arc and trip the breaker.
- The breaker itself may be worn, which is a job for an electrician.
What you can do:
- Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Don't keep resetting it. A short that trips the breaker again and again can damage the wiring.
- Note when it trips: right away, on bake only, on broil only, or only with the cooktop running too. That detail helps the technician.
The technician tests the elements, the wiring, the terminal block and the control, finds the short and replaces the failed part. If the oven checks out and the breaker still trips, we'll tell you so you can call an electrician about the circuit.
A Bang in the Pipes When the Ice Maker Fills
A sharp knock or bang in the wall a few seconds after the ice maker fills, or right after you let go of the water paddle, is usually water hammer. The fridge's water valve snaps shut, and the moving water in the supply line slams to a stop. It's loud, and over time it can loosen fittings.
- Note when it happens: only when the ice maker fills, only at the dispenser, or with sinks and the washer too.
- Check the supply line behind the fridge for a loose clamp or a line that bangs against the wall.
- If the whole house knocks, a plumber can fit a water hammer arrestor or check the house pressure.
If the noise comes only from the fridge, the technician checks the water inlet valve, its connections and the line routing, and replaces a valve that closes harshly or leaks.
