Freezer Thawing? Save the Food First

The USDA gives clear numbers for a freezer that has stopped working:

  • A full freezer holds for about 48 hours if the door or lid stays shut. A half-full freezer lasts about 24 hours. Keep the lid or door shut.
  • Group the food together. Packed items keep each other cold longer than scattered ones.
  • Check before you toss. Food that still has ice crystals, or that has stayed at 40°F or below, can be refrozen safely. Quality may drop a little, but it is safe.
  • Throw out what has warmed up. Meat, poultry, seafood and prepared dishes that have been above 40°F for longer than the times above should go.
  • Use a thermometer. A working freezer holds 0°F. A reading in the twenties or higher tells us the problem is serious.

While you wait, check the plug, the breaker and any GFCI outlet nearby. Garage and basement freezers often share an outlet that trips quietly.

The Freezers We Repair

Upright frost-free freezers. These work much like the freezer side of a refrigerator: an evaporator coil behind a rear panel, a fan to move the cold air and a defrost system to keep the coil clear. Fan and defrost failures are the most common calls.

Upright manual-defrost freezers. The cooling coils are built into the shelves. There is no defrost heater, so frost has to be removed by hand from time to time. When these stop cooling, the cause is usually in the compressor circuit or the thermostat.

Chest freezers. Most chest freezers are manual defrost, and their condenser tubing often runs inside the outer walls. That is why the sides feel warm when the unit is working, and it is normal. A chest freezer that is warm inside, silent or covered in heavy ice needs a look.

Freezer drawers and refrigerator freezers. Bottom drawers on French-door models, the freezer side of a side-by-side and top freezers. If the freezer is part of your refrigerator, our refrigerator repair page covers that side too.

Garage and second freezers. Georgia summers push a garage freezer hard. Many models are designed for a limited room-temperature range, while garage-ready models are built for a wider one. If a freezer struggles only in hot weather, we check whether the room is the problem before replacing parts.

Inside a Freezer Repair

A technician looks at the freezer as a full system, because a symptom in one place often starts somewhere else.

  • Compressor and start parts. The start relay and overload get the compressor running. They fail far more often than the compressor itself.
  • Condenser and condenser fan. Heat has to leave the freezer somewhere. A clogged coil or a stopped fan makes the compressor overheat and shut down.
  • Evaporator and evaporator fan. On frost-free models, the fan moves cold air from the coil into the cabinet. Ice on the blades or a worn motor stops it.
  • Defrost system. Heater, defrost thermostat and the timer or board that runs the cycle. One failed part lets frost grow until cooling stops.
  • Thermostat and sensors. A thermostat that sticks or a sensor that reads wrong can stop the compressor while the freezer warms up.
  • Gaskets, hinges and lids. A seal that no longer grips is a slow leak of cold air and a steady source of frost.
  • Sealed-system checks. If a refrigerant leak is suspected, our EPA 608 certified technicians are the ones allowed to test and work on it.

How We Handle an Urgent Freezer Call

You reach a person. Phones are answered 24/7. We take the brand, the style of freezer, the symptom and your ZIP code, then offer the earliest visit, usually same- or next-day.

We find the real cause. The technician checks temperatures, airflow, the start components, the defrost parts and the seal. You get a clear explanation of what failed before any repair begins, and the decision to go ahead is yours.

We repair, restart and confirm. The failed part is replaced with a genuine or OEM-approved part. The technician watches the freezer start pulling temperature down, so you know it is working again. A warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor covers the repair.

Brands We Service

We service upright, chest and built-in freezers from Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore, Maytag, Electrolux, Amana, Haier, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador, Viking, Monogram, Marvel and U-Line, plus many smaller names such as Danby and Summit. Our technicians bring years of experience with these brands.

We are an independent company with no affiliation with, or endorsement from, any freezer manufacturer. Brand names are listed only to describe what we repair.

Repair or Replace a Freezer?

Most freezer breakdowns come down to a fan, a relay, a thermostat, a defrost part or a gasket. Those are quick repairs, and a working freezer of reasonable age is worth keeping, especially a built-in unit or a large upright that is hard to replace.

The math changes when an older chest freezer has a refrigerant leak in its wall tubing, or a compressor has failed on a low-end unit. If we find that, we tell you straight, so you can choose with the facts and not under pressure.

Habits That Keep a Freezer Freezing

  • Defrost manual models before the frost reaches about a quarter inch. Unplug the freezer, move the food to coolers and let the ice melt. Never chip at it with a knife.
  • Close the drain plug on a chest freezer after defrosting, or the next defrost ends up on the floor.
  • Keep the freezer full. A packed freezer holds its cold better during door openings and power losses.
  • Clean the condenser on upright models once or twice a year.
  • Leave space around it. A freezer squeezed between boxes in a garage cannot shed heat.
  • Check the lid or door seal every few months for cracks and gaps.

Warning Signs Your Freezer Needs a Technician

Ice cream is soft, but the freezer is running

It is losing the fight. A dirty condenser, a weak fan or a door that does not seal can all leave it a few degrees short.

Thick frost on the back wall of an upright freezer

In a frost-free model that means the defrost cycle has failed. The ice smothers the coil and airflow slowly stops.

Frost on the food itself and a layer of ice near the door

Warm, humid air is getting in. A torn gasket, a sagging door or a lid that does not close fully is the usual cause.

It never shuts off

A freezer that runs nonstop is short on cooling, often because the condenser is packed with dust or a fan has quit.

It is completely silent and warm

No compressor and no fan, but the light works. A start relay, a thermostat or a control board fault is likely.

Clicking every few minutes

The compressor is trying to start and an overload is cutting it off.

Water on the floor under an upright freezer

A blocked defrost drain lets water spill out instead of reaching the drain pan.

The temperature alarm keeps beeping

Many newer freezers warn when the inside warms up. A door left ajar is the easy answer; if the door is shut, the alarm means a real fault.

A burning or hot electrical smell

Unplug it and call. Do not keep running a freezer that smells scorched.

Emergency FAQ

Freezer Repair FAQ

How long will food last in a freezer that stopped?

About 48 hours in a full freezer and about 24 hours in a half-full one, as long as the door or lid stays shut. That is USDA guidance.

Can I refreeze food that started to thaw?

Yes, if it still has ice crystals or has stayed at 40°F or below. That is the USDA rule. Quality may suffer, but the food is safe.

Why are the sides of my chest freezer warm?

On most chest freezers the condenser tubing runs inside the outer walls and releases heat there. Warm sides are normal. A warm inside is not.

My upright freezer has ice on the back wall. What failed?

On a frost-free model, heavy frost on the back panel means the defrost system stopped working. The heater, the defrost thermostat or the timer or board that runs the cycle is the usual cause.

What should my freezer thermometer read?

0°F. The USDA and FDA use 0°F as the safe freezer temperature.

Do you repair garage freezers?

Yes. We also check whether the garage itself is too hot for the model, since that can look like a failure.

How long is a freezer repair covered?

Our repairs carry a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.

Are you a manufacturer service center?

No. We are an independent, family-owned repair company and name brands only to show which freezers we work on.
