Bottles Frozen Solid in the Wine Cooler

A wine cooler set to 55°F should never freeze anything. So when you find bottles with corks pushed halfway out, ice crystals in the neck or a crack running down the glass, the cooler is running far colder than its setting. Wine freezes below the freezing point of water, how far below depending on the alcohol, and as it freezes it expands. The cork moves first; if it can't, the glass gives.

Do this right away:

  • Switch the cooler off or unplug it, so it stops freezing the rest of the collection.
  • Move the bottles upright into your kitchen refrigerator and let them thaw slowly there.
  • Check every bottle for cracks. Handle any cracked bottle over a sink, wearing gloves, and pour it out; glass splinters can sit inside.
  • Plan to drink the pushed-cork bottles soon. Air got in when the cork moved, and the wine won't keep the way it would have.
  • Wipe up spills inside the cabinet with the power off, before sticky wine reaches the fan or the drain.

Why it happens: a temperature sensor that has failed and reads warm, a control or relay stuck on so the compressor never stops, or a setting changed by accident. One bottle frozen to the back wall while the rest are fine is a different story: on many compressor coolers the back wall is the cold plate, and a bottle touching it can freeze while the cabinet stays normal.

Keep the cooler off until we've looked at it. Running it "just to see" can freeze another rack of wine. Book a visit and tell us the brand and model.

Milton Areas We Cover

  • Crabapple, the historic crossroads with its shops, restaurants and nearby homes.
  • The Birmingham area along GA 372, farmland and homes set on large lots.
  • Arnold Mill Road, subdivisions on the southwest side of the city.
  • Deerfield and the GA 400 corridor, offices, shops and townhomes.
  • Farms and horse properties, with barn fridges and freezers in outbuildings.

Milton is ZIP code 30004, which also covers part of Alpharetta; the ZIP code, not the city name, decides coverage. Put it in the form to check a specific address.

Milton Trouble to Take Seriously

  • Wine bottles frozen in the cooler. The control or the sensor has stopped regulating.
  • Smoke pouring out during self-clean. Turn the oven off if you can and air out the house.
  • A barn freezer reading above 10°F. A dirty condenser, a failed fan or a refrigerant leak.
  • A fridge that clicks every few minutes and stays warm. A compressor that can't get started.
  • Gas smell at the range with every knob off. Leave the house, then call the gas utility from outside.
  • An ice maker that keeps filling and overflows. A water valve that won't close.
  • An oven door still locked hours after cleaning. A failed lock motor or switch.

Restaurants and Shops in Crabapple and Deerfield

At the end of a long shift, a tall pot of stock or chili comes off the burner and goes straight into the reach-in. By morning the cooler has run nonstop all night, the coil is frosted from the steam, the food on the shelves around the pot is warmer than it should be, and the middle of the pot may still be warm. A reach-in is built to keep cold food cold. It isn't built to cool big batches of hot food.

The FDA Food Code gives cooked food two hours to drop from 135°F to 70°F, and six hours in total to reach 41°F or below. A deep pot in a reach-in rarely makes that. What works better:

  • Divide the batch into shallow pans so the heat has a short way to travel.
  • Use an ice bath in a sink, stirring the food now and then, or an ice paddle in the pot.
  • Check with a probe thermometer and write down the times and readings.
  • Load the reach-in only with food that's already cooled, and leave space between pans.
  • Use a blast chiller for large batches, if your kitchen has one.

If a reach-in can't hold 41°F even with cooled food and closed doors, the coil ices over after every busy night, or the compressor never stops, choose Business in the form and include the brand and model.

Self-Clean With Pet Birds in the House

The self-clean cycle burns food residue down to ash at very high heat. It sends smoke and fumes into the kitchen, and oven manuals warn that those fumes can harm pet birds, whose lungs are far more sensitive than ours. The same goes for a nonstick pan left empty on a hot burner, which can release fumes that are dangerous to birds.

Before you start a cleaning cycle:

  • Move the birds to a closed room as far from the kitchen as possible, with good fresh air.
  • Open windows and run the vent hood for the whole cycle and for a while after.
  • Wipe out loose crumbs and pooled grease first, since big spills smoke the most.
  • Take out the racks unless your manual says they can stay in.
  • Stay home for the whole cycle, and keep children and pets away from the hot door.

If the oven starts pouring smoke, turn it off. On most ovens the door stays locked until the inside cools, and that's how it should be: the closed door keeps flames from getting air. If you see flames that don't die down, or smoke spreads through the house, get everyone out and call 911.

Call us when the door won't unlock hours after the cycle ends, the oven shuts off partway with an error code, or it won't heat at all after cleaning. The cycle's high heat can take out a fuse, a sensor or the lock, and our technicians replace those parts.

How a Milton Repair Works

You call or write. A person answers 24/7, takes down the appliance, the brand, the problem and your ZIP code, and sets a same- or next-day window.

We track down the cause. The technician checks safety first, then the power, the gas, the temperatures and the parts linked to the symptom, and tells you what failed. Nothing is replaced until you approve it.

We repair it. A genuine or OEM-approved part goes in, the appliance is tested, and the work is covered by a warranty of up to 6 months on both parts and labor.

Milton Repair FAQ

Is my Milton address covered?

Yes, if it's in 30004. For a different ZIP code, the form tells you right away.

How soon can a technician get to Milton?

Milton repairs are booked same- or next-day. Earlier calls get the widest choice of times.

My wine cooler froze some bottles. Can I keep using it?

Not yet. Switch it off, move the wine to your fridge and book a visit; the control or sensor likely failed.

Is wine that froze still drinkable?

Usually, once it thaws slowly. If the cork moved, drink it soon, and pour out any bottle with cracked glass.

Is the self-clean cycle dangerous for pet birds?

Oven manuals warn that its fumes can harm birds. Move them far from the kitchen and keep the house aired out.

My oven is still locked after self-clean. What now?

Give it time to cool completely. If it stays locked hours later, the lock or a switch may have failed.

Can a reach-in cool a pot of hot soup overnight?

Not safely. Divide it into shallow pans or use an ice bath, then load it once it's cooled.

How long is a Milton repair covered?

Parts and labor alike, for up to 6 months.
