Boil-Water Notice? Stop Using the Ice Maker
When a water main breaks or a treatment problem hits the supply, the water utility may tell customers to boil water before drinking it. Most people remember the kitchen tap. Fewer remember the two machines that use that same water without boiling it: the refrigerator's ice maker and its water dispenser.
The CDC advises against using ice from an ice maker during a boil-water advisory. While the notice is in effect:
- Turn off the ice maker, and throw away the ice already in the bin. It may have been made with unsafe water.
- Don't drink from the fridge dispenser. A refrigerator filter isn't a substitute for boiling.
- Use bagged ice or ice made from boiled water, and keep it in a clean container.
When the notice is lifted, follow the steps in it. They usually include flushing the water lines, which for a fridge means running the dispenser for a few minutes, throwing out the ice made during and right after the advisory, and changing the water filter.
For restaurants and bars, the stakes are higher. Ice is food under the FDA Food Code. During an advisory, stop using the ice machine, discard the ice, and follow your health department's instructions before you start it again; that normally means cleaning and sanitizing the machine and changing its filters. If the machine won't restart, makes cloudy or slow ice afterward, or leaks, call us.

A reach-in refrigerator can only keep food cold if air can move through it. Fans push chilled air out of the evaporator and around the shelves, and that air has to find its way back. Pack the box too tight and the cold stays where it starts, while food in the far corners warms up.
Signs your reach-in is overloaded:
- The top shelf or the corners run warmer than the middle.
- Boxes sit right against the fan cover or the back wall, blocking the vents.
- The door won't swing shut on its own because product sticks out past the shelf edge.
- Frost builds on the coil cover while the box itself runs warm.
Leave a little space between products and the walls, keep the fan cover clear, and don't stack above the load line marked inside. Check the temperature with a probe thermometer at the front and at the back. Food held cold has to stay at 41°F or below to meet the FDA Food Code. If the reach-in still runs warm with the shelves arranged properly, choose Business in the form and send us the brand and model.

Everything in the Fridge Froze Overnight
You open the refrigerator in the morning and the milk is slushy, the lettuce is ruined and the eggs have cracked. A fridge that freezes food in the fresh-food section isn't just annoying; it wastes groceries, and on some models it's a sign of a part that's about to fail completely.
Start with the easy checks:
- The setting. Someone may have turned the fridge colder by mistake. A fridge set to about 37°F stays safely at or below 40°F without freezing food.
- What's in front of the vent. On many fridges, cold air from the freezer pours in near the top back of the fresh-food section. Food pushed against that vent can freeze solid.
- A thermometer reading. Put an appliance thermometer on the middle shelf and check it the next morning.
If the setting is right, the vent is clear and the thermometer still reads near freezing, the cause is usually inside: an air damper stuck open, a temperature sensor giving false readings, or a control that keeps the cold air flowing. Move delicate food, like produce and eggs, away from the back wall and call us. We'll test the damper, the sensor and the control.
How a Riverdale Repair Works
Booking. Someone answers 24/7, writes down the appliance, the brand, the symptom and your ZIP code, and sets a same- or next-day window.
Diagnosis. The technician checks for safety risks, then the power, temperatures and the parts linked to the problem, and explains what's broken. Work starts only after you agree.
Repair. A genuine or OEM-approved part is installed, the appliance is restarted and checked, and the repair carries a warranty of up to 6 months for parts and labor.
