Click, Hum, Click: A Compressor That Can't Start
Stand by a warm refrigerator for a few minutes and listen. If you hear a click, a low hum for a few seconds, then another click and silence, and the whole thing repeats every few minutes, the compressor is trying to start and failing. Each time, a safety device cuts the power before the motor overheats.
That pattern usually points to one of three things:
- The start device, a small relay or start component mounted on the side of the compressor. It's a common failure and a fairly quick repair.
- The compressor itself, if its motor is worn or locked up. That's a sealed-system repair, done only by EPA 608 certified technicians.
- Low voltage, for example from a long extension cord or a weak outlet, which can keep a healthy compressor from starting.
What to do right away:
- Don't keep unplugging and replugging the fridge to "reset" it. Repeated hard starts add stress to the compressor.
- Plug it straight into a grounded wall outlet if it's on an extension cord, then listen again.
- Move perishables into a cooler with ice, or into a working fridge, and keep the doors closed.
- Check the freezer temperature with an appliance thermometer. Food that has thawed and sat above 40°F needs a careful look before you keep it.
Then call us. The technician will test the start device and the compressor and tell you which one failed before any part is replaced.

Restaurants and Shops in Hampton and Along US 19/41
In a busy kitchen, a reach-in door opens over and over during a shift, and the gasket around it takes every one of those openings. Once a gasket tears or flattens, warm, humid kitchen air slips inside. The box runs longer, frost builds on the coil, and the food near the door creeps above safe temperature.
Check your gaskets once a week:
- Look at the corners and the hinge side, where tears start.
- Close the door on a strip of paper in a few spots. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is weak there.
- Clean the gasket with warm, soapy water. Grease and food buildup stiffen the rubber and keep it from sealing.
- Watch for frost or ice along the door frame inside the box.
Gaskets are made to fit a specific door, so the replacement has to match the make and model. Under the FDA Food Code, cold-held food must stay at 41°F or below, and a torn seal is one of the fastest ways to lose that. Choose Business in the form, tell us the brand and model, and mention which door is affected.

A Burner Stuck on High
You turn the knob to low, but the coil burner stays bright red. Or you turn it off, and it keeps glowing. On an electric range, each surface burner has its own control switch behind the knob. When the contacts inside that switch weld together or wear out, the switch stops cycling the power, and the burner runs flat out no matter where the knob points.
That's a fire risk, especially with a pan of oil on top or a dish towel nearby. Here's what to do:
- Move pans and anything flammable off the cooktop, carefully.
- Switch off the range at the breaker panel. The range uses a wide, double breaker.
- Don't use that burner, or the range, until it's repaired.
On a glass-top range, the same fault can make an element stay on or flash at full heat. On a gas range, a knob that won't shut the flame off is a different danger: turn off the gas at the range's shut-off valve if you can reach it safely, and if you smell gas, get out of the house and call the gas utility.
The repair is usually the burner's control switch, sometimes along with the burner itself or the wiring that took the extra heat. The technician tests both before replacing anything.
How a Hampton Repair Goes
Step one. You call, and someone answers 24/7. We note the appliance, the brand, the symptom and your ZIP code, then book a same- or next-day window.
Step two. The technician checks for anything unsafe, then the power, the temperatures and the parts tied to your problem, and tells you what has failed. You decide before work starts.
Step three. A genuine or OEM-approved part is installed, the appliance is turned back on and checked, and the repair carries up to 6 months of warranty for the part and the labor alike.
