A Fishy Smell With No Fish in the House
Nobody cooked fish, but the kitchen smells like it, or faintly like urine. That odd smell can come from electrical parts that are overheating. Many outlets, plugs, switches and wire coverings are made with plastics and resins that give off a fishy odor as they get too hot, well before anything visibly melts.
Where it tends to start:
- The outlet behind the range or the fridge, hidden where nobody looks.
- The range power cord and the terminal block where it connects at the back of an electric range.
- The plug of a fridge or freezer, especially one pushed hard against the wall.
- A power strip or an extension cord feeding a garage freezer or a wine cooler.
What to do:
- Follow your nose to the strongest spot, without touching anything that feels hot.
- Switch off the breaker for that circuit. An electric range is usually on a double breaker in the panel.
- Look for warning marks: brown or black stains, warped or melted plastic, a plug that's warm, or a buzz or crackle.
- Leave it off until it's checked. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
Who fixes what: an outlet or the wiring in the wall is a job for an electrician. On the appliance side, our technicians replace burned range terminal blocks, power cords, element terminals and damaged wiring inside the fridge, freezer or range, using genuine or OEM-approved parts.

Shops and Kitchens Around Rex
Cases of lettuce on the top shelf come out stiff and dark at the edges, the milk has slush in it, and the sauces at the back show ice crystals. A reach-in has to hold food at 41°F or below under the FDA Food Code, but one that runs far colder than that ruins produce, dairy and sauces, and staff start propping the door to warm it, which causes new problems.
Why a reach-in freezes food:
- The control is set too low. Someone turned it colder on a hot day and forgot.
- Product sits in the cold air stream. Air leaving the evaporator is well below freezing. Boxes pushed against the fan or the coil cover freeze first.
- A temperature sensor has failed and reads warmer than the box really is, so the cooler keeps running.
- The control or a relay is stuck, keeping the compressor on.
- Vents are blocked, so cold air pools in one spot instead of spreading.
What to try: put a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf overnight and compare it with the setting. Many kitchens aim for the mid-30s. Keep produce and dairy off the back wall and away from the fan, and leave space between cases. If the reading sits below 32°F with a normal setting and clear vents, choose Business in the form and include the brand and model.

Ice Spreading Across the Freezer Floor
A smooth sheet of ice covers the bottom of the freezer, a drawer won't slide, or water drips down into the fresh-food section below. In a frost-free freezer, a heater melts the frost off the cooling coil from time to time. The water runs into a trough and down a drain hole near the bottom of the back panel, then out to a pan under the fridge, where it dries. When that drain clogs or freezes, the water backs up and freezes on the floor of the freezer.
What causes it:
- Food bits or packaging washed into the drain hole.
- A frozen drain. On some models a small heater or a metal strip keeps the drain warm, and when it fails, ice plugs the drain.
- A defrost fault that leaves ice on the coil and in the trough.
- Extra moisture from a door left ajar or a torn gasket.
What to do:
- Save the food first. Move it to coolers or another freezer.
- Melt the ice gently. Unplug the freezer and use warm, damp towels or bowls of warm water. Don't chip at it with anything sharp; tubing can run close behind the walls.
- Catch the water. Lay towels on the floor of the fridge section and in front of the unit.
- Don't take panels apart. The drain and the coil sit behind them, with wiring nearby.
If the ice comes back within days, the drain heater, the defrost system or the drain itself needs a technician. Book a visit, and have the brand and model handy.

Emergency FAQ
Rex Repair FAQ
Is my Rex address covered?
All of 30273 is. For other ZIP codes, the form gives an answer straight away.
How soon can a technician come to Rex?
Rex repairs are booked same- or next-day; call early for the most choice.
Why does my kitchen smell like fish when nothing is cooking?
Overheating electrical parts can smell fishy. Find the spot, switch off that breaker and have it checked.
Who fixes a burned outlet behind the range?
An electrician handles the outlet and the house wiring. We repair the range's cord, terminal block and inside wiring.
Why is there a sheet of ice on my freezer floor?
The defrost drain is likely clogged or frozen, so melt water backs up and refreezes.
Is it okay to break up the ice with a knife?
Please don't. Melt it with warm, damp towels, with the freezer unplugged; sharp tools can puncture tubing.
Our reach-in is freezing the lettuce. What should we check?
The setting, and whether produce sits against the fan or the back wall. If those are fine, book a Business visit.
What does a Rex repair warranty include?
Parts and labor, for as long as 6 months.
