A Burner That Lights With a Whoosh
A healthy gas burner lights within a click or two, with a calm ring of blue flame. A burner that clicks several times and then catches with a loud whoosh or a pop has let gas build up before the spark caught it. That's called delayed ignition, and the burst of flame can singe a hand, a sleeve or hair.
Common causes:
- A wet burner after a boilover or a fresh cleaning.
- Clogged burner ports, often from spills that baked on.
- A burner cap sitting off-center, so the spark doesn't reach the gas at the right spot.
- A dirty or cracked igniter, the small white ceramic tip next to the burner.
- A weak spark from a failing spark module.
What to do:
- Turn the burner off and let it cool.
- Dry it completely. Lift off the grate and cap and let the parts dry before you try again. Never relight a burner that's still wet.
- Clear the ports the way your manual describes. A straightened paper clip works on many burners; toothpicks can snap off inside.
- Seat the cap flat and centered on its base.
- Wipe the igniter tip gently with a dry cloth.
Stop using that burner and call us if the whoosh keeps happening, flames roll out sideways or under the cooktop, or the igniter's ceramic is cracked. The same goes for an oven that lights with a boom. If you smell gas with every knob turned off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside first; we'll take care of the range after that.

Cafés and Bars on North Avondale Road
Undercounter coolers and back-bar coolers live in tight spots, with a counter above them and no room at the sides or back. So most of them breathe through a grille at the front, near the floor. They pull room air in across the condenser, then push warm air back out through the same opening. Block that grille and the cooler starts breathing its own hot air.
Things that end up in front of the grille:
- Rubber floor mats pushed against the bottom of the cooler.
- Cases of bottles, bags of ice or boxes stacked on the floor.
- Mop buckets and trash cans parked there during cleanup.
- Lint and dust caked on the grille and the condenser behind it.
Signs it's overheating: the air from the grille feels hotter than usual, the cooler runs without a break, the cabinet warms through the evening, or the compressor clicks off and on. Keep the grille clear, tuck mats short of it, and clean the grille and condenser on the schedule in your manual with the power off. Drinks and food held cold still have to stay at 41°F or below under the FDA Food Code. If the cooler keeps running warm with a clean, open grille, choose Business in the form and give us the make and model.

A Scorched Cabinet Next to the Oven
Wall ovens and ovens built into cabinetry keep their heat inside with insulation, a tight door seal and, on many models, a cooling fan that moves hot air away from the controls and the cabinets. When one of those fails, the heat goes into the wood around the oven.
Signs heat is escaping:
- The wood next to or above the oven darkens, or its finish blisters and peels.
- Trim pieces warp or pull away from the cabinet.
- The cabinet face feels hot to the touch while the oven bakes.
- You smell hot wood or scorched paint during long bakes.
- Plastic knobs or handles nearby soften or change shape.
What to do:
- Stop using the oven until it's checked. Wood that keeps getting baked can char.
- Look at the door. Heat pouring out along the top edge points to a worn gasket or a door that no longer closes square.
- Listen for the cooling fan, if your model has one. A fan that used to run during and after baking and has gone silent may have failed.
- Keep the vents in the oven trim open. Nothing should be tucked into them.
- Check the install guide if the oven is new to the cabinet. A model that doesn't match the cutout and its clearances can overheat the cabinetry.
- Skip self-clean until the oven is repaired; it's the hottest cycle of all.
If you see smoke coming from the cabinet, switch off the breaker. If there are flames, get out and call 911.

How soon can a technician reach Avondale Estates?
Avondale Estates visits are same- or next-day. Book early for the widest choice of times.
My gas burner lights with a loud whoosh. Is that dangerous?
It can singe hands and hair. Turn it off, dry and clean the burner, seat the cap, and call us if it keeps happening.
Can I relight a burner right after a boilover?
Wait until it's completely dry. A wet burner is a common cause of delayed ignition.
The cabinet next to my wall oven is turning dark. What should I do?
Stop using the oven and book a visit. Heat is escaping through the door, the insulation or a failed cooling fan.
Is it safe to run self-clean on that oven?
Not until it's checked. Self-clean is the hottest cycle and puts the most heat into the cabinets.
Our undercounter bar cooler runs warm. Where do we start?
Clear and clean the front grille. Still warm after that? Book a Business visit.
How long are Avondale Estates repairs warrantied?
Up to 6 months, and the warranty covers the labor too.
