A Pilot Light Went Out on an Older Range
Gas ranges built before electronic igniters became common often use standing pilot lights: small flames that burn all the time, usually under the cooktop between the burners and sometimes inside the oven. On many older cooktops, nothing shuts off the pilot's gas if its flame goes out. A faint gas smell near the range is often the first sign.
What to do:
- Turn every burner and oven knob to off.
- Strong smell, or can't tell where it's coming from? Leave the house right away. Don't flip light switches or use your phone inside. Call the gas utility from outside.
- A faint smell right at the range? Open the windows, keep flames and sparks away, and let the smell clear completely before you do anything else.
- Relight only by the instructions printed on the range or in its manual. If you don't have them, don't improvise. Book a visit instead.
Why a pilot keeps going out:
- Drafts from an open window, a ceiling fan or a door near the range.
- A clogged pilot opening, often from grease and spills under the cooktop.
- A flame set too low to stay lit.
- A worn safety part on the oven pilot. Many older ovens have a thermocouple or a similar device that cuts the oven gas when the pilot is out; when it weakens, the pilot won't stay lit.
Our technicians clean and adjust pilots, replace thermocouples and valves, and check the gas connections while they're there. If your old range has been more trouble than it's worth, they'll tell you that plainly too.

Markets, Cafés and Shops Around Scottdale
A glass-door drink cooler or a deli case parked in a storefront window gets the full afternoon sun. Light through the glass warms the product at the front of each shelf, the case runs without a break, the doors fog, and the temperature display creeps up during the hottest hours. The case may be fine. It's just losing a fight with the window.
What helps:
- Move it out of direct sun, even a few feet back from the glass.
- Shade the window with blinds, window film or an awning if the case has to stay put.
- Keep the vents clear. Many cases breathe through a grille at the top or the bottom; boxes and signs in front of it make the heat worse.
- Load product cold. Warm cases of drinks from the stockroom give the cooler a long climb.
- Read the manual's room limits. Display cases are built for a certain range of room temperature and humidity.
Product held cold has to stay at 41°F or below under the FDA Food Code. If the case runs warm even out of the sun, or overnight with the doors closed, the condenser, a fan, the door heaters or the refrigerant charge may need a technician. Choose Business in the form and give us the make and model.

Ghost Key Presses After Cleaning the Oven Panel
You spray cleaner straight onto the oven's control panel and wipe it down. An hour later the oven beeps by itself, the clock changes, error codes flash, or it starts preheating with nobody near it. Liquid has likely seeped under the edge of the glass or the keypad and is bridging the contacts, so the control reads key presses that nobody made.
What to do:
- If the oven heats on its own, switch off its breaker. Pressing Cancel may not help while the keys are wet.
- Let it dry out. Leave the power off for a day so moisture under the panel can evaporate. A fan pointed at the panel helps.
- Test it. Turn the breaker back on and watch the display for several minutes before you cook.
- Clean it differently next time. Spray the cleaner onto a soft cloth, never onto the panel, and turn on the control lock first if your oven has one.
If the phantom presses come back after the panel has dried, or some keys stop answering, the keypad or the control board has been damaged. Our technicians replace both with genuine or OEM-approved parts. Until then, leave the breaker off, especially if anyone in the house might leave pans, towels or paper on the cooktop.
How a Scottdale Repair Works
Reach a dispatcher. A person answers 24/7, notes the appliance, the brand, the symptom and your ZIP code, and schedules a same- or next-day window.
See the diagnosis. The technician checks safety, the power, the gas and the temperatures, tests the parts linked to the problem, and explains what failed. Nothing gets repaired without your approval.
Watch the repair get tested. A genuine or OEM-approved part is fitted, the appliance runs and is checked, and the work carries a warranty of up to 6 months that spans parts and labor.
