Reach-In Freezer Going Soft? Commercial Freezer Repair Across Metro Atlanta
One-, two- and three-door reach-in freezers, glass-door freezers and dual-temp cabinets in restaurants, bakeries, schools and stores across the Atlanta metro.
A reach-in freezer is supposed to be boring. It holds fries, proteins, dough, ice cream and portioned sauces at a steady zero or below, and nobody thinks about it. Then one morning the prep cook opens it and the fries bend instead of snap, the ice cream has a soft shine and there's a thick sheet of frost on the back wall. That's the moment a freezer stops being boring.

Freezer Problems Kitchens Report
- "It's reading 15°F and climbing." A freezer that slowly loses ground usually has a dirty condenser, a failing fan, a leaking gasket or an evaporator coil buried in ice.
- "There's a solid block of ice on the coil." The defrost system isn't doing its job. A failed heater, a bad defrost timer or controller, or a termination sensor that never signals can let ice build until air can't pass through.
- "It's dripping water from inside the door." Defrost water should drain out of the cabinet. A frozen or clogged drain line sends it into the box, where it refreezes on the floor of the cabinet or drips out the bottom of the door.
- "The door is hard to open right after we close it." That suction is normal for a few seconds. If the door frosts shut or the gasket tears when you pull it, the door heater or the gasket may have failed.
- "There's frost around the door frame." Freezers use heaters around the door opening to keep the gasket from freezing to the frame. When that heater quits, frost and ice build on the edge.
- "The fan inside is louder than it used to be." Ice touching the evaporator fan blade, or a fan motor with worn bearings.
- "It's been in defrost for an hour." A stuck defrost timer or controller can hold the freezer in a heating cycle far too long.
- "The compressor runs nonstop and the box won't go below 10°F." That points to a heat-rejection problem, a restricted system or a refrigerant issue. An EPA 608 certified technician checks the sealed system.
What We Do on a Reach-In Freezer Visit
Before we arrive. We'll ask for the make and model from the data plate, the temperature you're reading, whether there's ice on the coil and what's stored inside. A photo of the plate and of the back wall helps.
Diagnosis. The technician measures air and product temperatures, checks the condenser and condenser fan, the evaporator fan, the defrost heater, timer or controller and termination sensor, the door and drain heaters, the gaskets, the start components and the compressor. When the symptoms suggest a refrigerant problem, the tech also reads the sealed system.
Your decision. You hear what failed and what it takes to fix, in plain words, before any part goes in.
Repair and recovery. If the coil is iced, we clear it before testing the repair. Genuine or OEM-approved parts go in, and we watch the cabinet start pulling back down. If a part has to be ordered, we name it and set the return. Freezer repairs carry a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.
Protecting Frozen Product Until We Arrive
- Keep the door closed. A packed freezer holds its cold far longer when nobody opens it.
- Move the most valuable product first — proteins, seafood and ice cream — to another freezer or the walk-in.
- Don't chip at the ice on the coil with a knife or scraper. A punctured coil turns a defrost repair into a sealed-system repair.
- Check the drain under or behind the cabinet for a frozen line or an overflowing pan.
- Write down the display reading and any alarm code before anyone resets the controller.
- Watch for thawing. Food that thaws and refreezes changes texture and may need to be judged under your food safety plan. When in doubt, ask your health inspector or follow your company's policy.
Glass-Door Freezers in Stores
Convenience stores, markets and cafés often run glass-door reach-in freezers for ice cream, frozen meals and bagged ice. These units fight two extra battles. The glass needs heaters to stay clear, and customers leave the door open while they decide. If the glass fogs, the door frame sweats or the product near the door softens first, the door heaters, the gaskets and the door closers deserve a look before anything else. We repair glass-door freezers along with solid-door models.
Reach-In Freezers We Repair
- One-, two- and three-door reach-in freezers, solid or glass doors.
- Top-mount and bottom-mount self-contained models.
- Dual-temperature cabinets with a freezer section.
- Glass-door merchandiser freezers in stores and cafés.
- Undercounter freezers and freezer drawers; more on our undercounter refrigerator repair page.
- Roll-in freezers that are self-contained.
We service self-contained commercial refrigeration units (5 lbs of refrigerant or less) per EPA Section 608 Type I requirements. We do not service walk-in coolers or remote/rack refrigeration systems.
Repair or Replace a Reach-In Freezer?
Defrost heaters, timers, controllers, sensors, fan motors, door heaters, gaskets, hinges and start parts can all be replaced, and so can the compressor on many cabinets. Replacement starts to make sense when the cabinet is rusted, the insulation is wet and the walls sweat on the outside, or the sealed system fails on an older unit. We lay out what each choice involves, and you decide.
Freezer Makes We Service
We service True reach-in freezers and other commercial freezer makes, from older cabinets with mechanical timers to newer ones with electronic defrost control.
We're an independent repair company, not tied to True or any other manufacturer and not endorsed by them. Brand names are used only to describe equipment we work on. For a freezer still under the maker's warranty, the dealer or the manufacturer is usually the first stop.

Why Freezers Need a Different Kind of Attention
Defrost is everything. A commercial freezer coil runs well below freezing, so any moisture that gets in turns to frost. Several times a day the defrost system heats the coil, melts that frost and drains the water away. If any part of that cycle fails, the freezer chokes on its own ice.
Heaters you don't see. Door frames, drain lines and sometimes the drain pan have small heaters to keep ice from forming where it shouldn't. They are easy to forget and important when they fail.
Every opening counts more. Warm, humid kitchen air rushes in each time the door opens, and in an Atlanta summer that air carries a lot of water. Glass-door freezers in stores get opened by customers all day, which loads the coil with frost even faster.
Overloading blocks the air. Cases stacked tight to the evaporator fan cover or the back wall stop the cold air from moving. The top shelf warms first.
Emergency FAQ
Reach-In Freezer Repair FAQ
What temperature should a commercial freezer hold?
Most kitchens keep reach-in freezers at 0°F or below. Check your equipment manual and your food safety plan for the setting that fits your product.
Why is there ice on the back wall of my freezer?
The defrost cycle may have stopped working, or moist air is getting in through a damaged gasket or a door that doesn't close.
Can I melt the ice myself?
You can unplug the freezer, move the product and let the ice melt with the door open, but don't chip or scrape it. If ice comes back within days, a defrost part has failed.
Why does my freezer door freeze to the frame?
The heater around the door frame may have failed, or the gasket is worn and letting moist air reach the frame.
Why is water dripping out of the bottom of my freezer?
The defrost drain may be frozen or clogged, or its heater has quit, so meltwater collects in the cabinet instead of draining.
Do you repair glass-door freezers in stores?
Yes, including the glass and frame heaters and the door closers.
Is an old reach-in freezer worth fixing?
Often. Most freezer parts are replaceable. If the cabinet or insulation is failing, we'll say so plainly.
Is there a warranty on freezer repairs?
Yes. Reach-in freezer repairs are covered for up to 6 months on parts and labor.
