Undercounter Cooler Losing Temperature? Commercial Repair in Metro Atlanta

Undercounter refrigerators and freezers, worktops and drawer units in restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and offices across the Atlanta metro.

An undercounter refrigerator lives in a tight spot. It sits under a counter, a sandwich board or an espresso machine, with a few inches of air in front and a wall behind. It holds the milk for the next hundred lattes, the garnish for the line or the sliced meats for the lunch rush. Nobody notices it until a barista pours milk that's a little too warm, or a cook pulls a tray of cheese that's starting to sweat.

EmergencyFridgeRepair.com repairs commercial undercounter refrigerators and freezers for businesses across Atlanta. Call (770) 334-4410 — someone answers 24/7 — or book with the form on this page. Visits are same- or next-day, and we'll give you the earliest real opening when you call.

Undercounter Problems Staff Describe

  1. "It was fine in the morning and warm by two o'clock." A compact cabinet has little cold in reserve. Steady door openings plus a condenser that can't shed heat let the temperature creep up through the shift.
  2. "The milk on the top shelf is colder than the milk at the bottom." Air isn't moving evenly. A weak evaporator fan, a blocked air path or product stacked against the fan cover is the usual reason.
  3. "The counter above it feels warm." Heat from the condenser has nowhere to go. A unit built to breathe from the front can still choke if the grille is blocked, and a rear-breathing model pushed against a wall has no exhaust path at all.
  4. "The drawers won't close all the way." Drawer slides wear, rollers crack, and a drawer that stops a quarter inch short leaks cold air around the whole gasket.
  5. "There's frost on the coil behind the panel." Moist air is getting in through a gasket or a drawer, or the defrost cycle has stopped clearing the coil.
  6. "Water is pooling under the counter." The drain line may be clogged with debris, the evaporator pan may be cracked, or the pan heater may have failed.
  7. "The compressor keeps clicking on and off." A compressor that can't start runs short cycles: a start relay, an overload or a capacitor is a common cause, and so is a condenser so dirty the system overheats.
  8. "The controller shows an alarm we don't recognize." Digital controllers log probe faults, high-temperature alarms and door alarms. Write the code down before anyone resets it.

What Happens on an Undercounter Visit

Before we arrive. We'll ask for the make and model (the data plate is usually inside the door or on the side wall), the temperature you're reading and what's above the unit. A phone photo of the plate helps.

Diagnosis. The technician measures product and air temperatures, checks the condenser and its fan, the evaporator fan, the controller and probe, the start components, the gaskets, drawers and drain. If the unit has to slide out of its cutout, we check the cord and drain line as it moves.

Your decision. You hear what failed and what the repair involves in plain words, and nothing gets installed until you approve it.

Repair and pull-down. We install genuine or OEM-approved parts and watch the cabinet start recovering before we leave. If a part needs ordering, we tell you which one and book the return visit. Undercounter repairs are covered for up to 6 months on parts and labor.

Undercounters Behind the Coffee Bar

Coffee shops and cafés run some of the hardest-working undercounters in the city. A milk fridge under an espresso machine gets opened for nearly every drink and sits right below a machine that throws off heat all day. Steam wand drips and milk spills find their way into the drawer tracks and the drain. If your milk fridge is struggling, look at three things: is anything blocking the front grille, is the door or drawer gasket torn or stiff with dried milk, and is the unit pushed so far back that it can't breathe? Cleaning the grille and the gasket can buy time while you wait for a visit.

Before the Technician Gets There

  • Move dairy, proteins and cut produce first to another refrigerator or the walk-in.
  • Keep the door shut as much as service allows.
  • Clear the front grille of boxes, mats and towels, and give it a gentle brushing with the unit unplugged.
  • Check the plug and breaker. Undercounters often share outlets with countertop equipment.
  • Trust a thermometer. The FDA Food Code calls for cold-held food at 41°F or below; a probe thermometer in the product tells you more than the display.

Undercounter Equipment We Repair

  • One- and two-door undercounter refrigerators and freezers, solid or glass doors.
  • Drawer undercounters with two to four refrigerated drawers.
  • Worktop refrigerators with a stainless or cutting-board top.
  • Low-profile units under griddles and countertop cooking equipment.
  • Undercounter milk coolers behind coffee and smoothie bars.
  • Compact undercounters in offices, break rooms and medical offices.

We service self-contained commercial refrigeration units (5 lbs of refrigerant or less) per EPA Section 608 Type I requirements. We do not service walk-in coolers or remote/rack refrigeration systems.

Repair or Replace an Undercounter?

Fans, controllers, probes, start parts, gaskets, drawer slides, hinges and pan heaters are all replaceable, and so is the compressor on many models. Replacement becomes the better choice when the cabinet is rusting through, the insulation is wet, or the sealed system has failed on an older, inexpensive unit. If the cutout itself is the problem, we'll tell you that too, because a new unit in the same airless space will run into the same trouble.

Undercounter Makes We Service

We service True undercounters and worktops, as well as units from other commercial refrigeration makers, from older models with dial thermostats to current ones with digital controllers.

EmergencyFridgeRepair.com is an independent repair company. We have no ties to True or any other manufacturer, none of them endorses us, and brand names appear only to describe the equipment we repair. If your unit is still under the maker's warranty, check with the dealer or the manufacturer first.

Why Undercounters Fail Differently From Reach-Ins

Less room, more heat. A full-height reach-in has open air above it. An undercounter is boxed in on three sides by cabinetry and has a work surface on top that often holds a hot appliance: a panini press, a coffee machine, a rice cooker or a soup well. The whole refrigeration system lives in a few cubic feet with very little breathing room.

Front-breathing or rear-breathing. Many undercounters are built to pull air in and push it out through a front grille so they can sit flush under a counter. Others need clearance at the back or sides. Putting a rear-breathing unit into a cutout meant for a front-breathing one is one of the quickest ways to shorten its life. The data plate and the manual tell you which kind you have.

Floor level means dirt. The condenser sits a few inches off the floor, where it pulls in flour, coffee grounds, lint and the spray from mopping. On a busy line, the grille can mat over in weeks.

Drawers carry weight. Drawer units hold full hotel pans and get yanked open hundreds of times a day. Slides, rollers, drawer gaskets and the drawer frame all take a beating.

Emergency FAQ

Undercounter Refrigerator Repair FAQ

Why is the counter above my undercounter refrigerator warm?

The condenser is pushing heat into a space it can't escape. Check that the front grille is clear and that the unit has the clearance its design calls for.

How do I know if my undercounter is front-breathing?

The data plate and the manual say so. Front-breathing units usually have a full-width grille at the bottom front and are rated for zero clearance at the sides and back.

My drawer unit won't hold temperature. Is it the drawers?

It might be. Worn slides or a torn drawer gasket let cold air out all day. We check the drawers along with the refrigeration parts.

How often should an undercounter condenser be cleaned?

In a busy kitchen or café, every one to three months. Units near flour, coffee grounds or fryers may need it more often. Unplug the unit first.

Can you repair the milk fridge under our espresso machine?

Yes. We repair undercounter milk coolers and check whether heat from the machine above is part of the problem.

What temperature should an undercounter hold?

Food that needs temperature control should be held at 41°F or below under the FDA Food Code. Many kitchens set undercounters a few degrees lower for a margin.

Do you repair undercounter freezers too?

Yes, solid- and glass-door undercounter freezers and freezer drawers.

Is the repair covered?

Yes. Undercounter repairs carry a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.
